On Making it Through 2020...

Less than a month to go...
Congratulations! We've almost gotten through this dumpster fire of a year! Although it was one of the worst and probably most unforgettable years I've lived through so far, I have to say that a lot of growth came out of it. I wanted to share a roundup of what I've learned and dealt with because I even enjoy sharing my dullest moments with you all. Isn't that what my blog is for?

Getting a Grip of My Anxiety
I feel like I might have hit the highest of the highs on my anxiety meter this year, and I'm not alone either. There would be days filled with sitting at home in the company of family and Netflix movie binge nights and other days where I would just hit a wall and want to be in bed all day. Not only that, but even looking at the news and reading the headlines would give me the smallest bit of motivation to find something positive about the day ahead. I found myself worrying, dwelling, and manifesting the wrong negative emotions when all I needed was a reminder of what I already have and the support that surrounds me.

When all things came burning down, I knew that someone had it worse than me. That I could put my energy towards helping others as much as I could—I found that recycling my anxiousness for compassion during these times was the best way out of an emotional rut and I will be forever grateful for that.

Finding a Dose of Sunshine
With all the bad times, come good times. I am a believer that darker days will eventually turn into brighter ones. We've seen the best of people come forward this year and it seemed like a little part of humanity was restored. On a smaller scale, I felt more connected with the people I've had strong bonds with (even from a distance). Whether it be safe outdoor get togethers, camping, bike riding, dog walking, or what have you. I've always felt joy being outside. In the words of one of my favorite co-operative companies, REI, "A life outdoors is a life well lived".
Home for the Holidays...
Being an Advocate for People and Togetherness
On almost graduating from college, I have learned a lot—like more than I could even remember from day one of freshman year. In my communications program, we were told that connections are one of the most important assets for building a career in public relations. I have always considered myself to be somewhat of a people pleaser, but at times, less of an advocate for people. A lot of kids in my major were focused on the hustle, and I would be lying if I didn't say I was too (and still am). With that, I felt like my interactions were less authentic, less human, and sadly just a business transaction with an individual. It's a selfish way of communicating—only listening to respond or to gain something from someone and not as a way to learn from one another. Uplifting peoples' voices and building togetherness is something I want to be an advocate for and continue challenging others to do the same. We need to hear each other because what harmony can we ultimately create without it?

A Better Outlook
In spite of everything, life can turn out to be a real shit show and this year was only the beginning to what could be. However, I reject that mindset. Why anticipate the worst when we could be living the best goddamn life we've dreamed of? A life lesson I've been preaching to others and not myself. When the best of reality gets to me, all I can think of are destructive "what ifs" and "when" something might happen. With the amount of self-help books I've skimmed, wasting all that energy on things that might not even occur is not a healthy way of living. This year taught me that positivity is a better scapegoat than eating Ben and Jerry's at one in the morning because all doom is bound to come. I found a better outlook on the possibility of finding better—becoming better. I'm not a changed person per se, but that doesn't mean I can make changes, have setbacks, and look forward to better ones (changes, of course).
New Motivations
The itching for a new year on the calendar has me setting aside new goals, prioritizing the work that needs to be done on myself, and becoming more inspired to realign with my passions that were put on hold. This holiday season was what we all needed. Cheer, togetherness, and comfort. How ever life becomes uncomfortable and less joyful, is when we need to bond tightly and not take the life we're given for granted. As imperfect as the days can be, I wish that everybody's new years are brought with light and love. X

A More Sustainable Gift Guide

Staying at home has definitely made me rethink my consumption habits and how much I'm spending on the day to day. With this year being the largest for online shopping, I think it's safe to say that every body is still manifesting the season of giving, whether we can be with family or not. One of the reasons is that shopping has become one of the biggest hobbies for a lot of people. Sadly, there's not much else to do so people are spending their money at big online retailers like Target and Amazon. Not only that, but I think we are so bored sometimes that it's easy for us to just add things to our cart nowadays without being mindful of what we're buying.

What I've gathered is that the holiday season is one of the most wasteful times of the year. In fact, plastic usage has been up 500% in 2020. With Black Friday deals following the 25 days of discounts, I think a lot of people (even me) fall victim to consumption during the holidays, and even unhealthy shopping habits at that. As someone who is passionate about the environment, I have found a few sustainably conscious gift ideas and bits from small businesses that could be the better choice of giving to friends and family this year.
Reusable Drinkware...
One of the easiest and cost efficient ways to reduce our plastic usage is gifting someone reusable drinkware. Whether it be a nice Swell water bottle or some retro holographic metal straws, these can be great gifts and stocking stuffers for anyone who takes drinking water seriously or who wants to be motivated to drink more water, but with style. I find that the perfect reusable water bottle inspires me throughout the day to reach for it more often than a normal plastic bottle does. If you want to get really fun with it, Flask2Gos are also a great gift for those who might need to take the edge off on the go (responsibly, of course).

Sustainable Beauty...
I always love to support sustainable beauty brands that are not only cruelty free and vegan, but have a brand message that extends beyond surface level authenticity and transparency. Products that I know are always worth putting my dollar to come from smaller businesses that value and are mindful of who uses them. I have always been a huge fan of Glossier products, especially their glistening Lidstar eye shadow in cub and the Boy Brow Pomade which keeps my brows in place all day long.

I recently won a Women's Collective box, which is a one-women shop for all things beauty and lifestyle products made by real women for women. It uplifts women owned businesses which is a mission I will 100% support. Featured in this months box were a few skincare items I loved such as this homemade COCO whipped sugar scrub which has become a new recent favorite. It's always a great gift during the winter time when everyone's skin gets a bit dry and also a nice Sunday self care treat at the end of the day. It includes natural ingredients like coconut sugar, cocoa butter, and avocado oil for moisture. I always love a good face mask and the box came with these Maskeraide matcha detoxifying clay masks which include natural matcha that has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties for acne, kaolin which helps with anti-aging, and peach and lychee for hydration and a boost of vitamins. There are twelve single uses to gift to your friends or gift to yourself—and the paper packaging is the cherry on top!

A Good-to-Earth Accessory...
It's so easy to not think about the little accessories we need and use everyday, but things like stationary, tech accessories, and even commonplace items like jars and paper bags can make a big difference to reducing our carbon footprint. Another product that came with the Women's Collective package was this Always Inspiration Journal from the Ruff House Print Shop, a women owned hand printed letterpress shop. These notebooks use 100% conservation quality mat board that is acid and lignin-free, which can be toxic and non-biodegradable.

A lot of people always ask me about my Pela phone case, a 100% compostable, eco-friendly phone case that is made from plant-based biopolymers, like flax straw fibre, which is a waste byproduct of oilseed harvest. They are NSF tested and BPA free, containing no traces of harmful lead, cadmium, or phthalates. They're also classic and minimal cases for those who like understated tech accessories with a conscious! I've also dropped my phone a million times and it's protected it every drop.
As more companies are becoming mindful of their consumers values, specifically with protecting the environment and supporting small businesses, I think we can begin to shop with better intentions and put our dollar where it is worth supporting. If we can think of more creative and sustainably focused ways of buying gifts this year, it might come full circle and help out those in your community who need it most. I'd love to hear more sustainable gift giving ideas or products that you love, so be sure to leave them in the comments below! If there's one thing you should take away from this, whether it be a new gift idea or not, I believe that we can all be better by making smaller but more impactful decisions for our communities and our planet.

12 Ways of Giving This Holiday Season

Every year during Christmastime my family adopts a family. But not in the way you think. It would be a small family and a couple of kids who needed extra support over the holidays. I remember going to the toy store with my parents and picking out toys for boys and wondering why we were doing it. As I grew older, this would become a regular holiday tradition and each year we would receive a new family or two to help which always made my family and I so happy. We know it wasn't much that we were doing, but knowing that these kids would receive presents on Christmas was a small gesture and a way to give back during a time when a lot of families, even this year, have struggled the most.

Rather than giving into the materialism that fuels the holiday season, there are many ways and reasons to be selfless this time of year. Focusing on the joys of others and doing the most you can to give might even change a person's life. So instead of providing links to gifts you can give, I have accumulated 12 different ways you can give back, big or small, to others this year. It's in these small gestures of kindness that I feel our world should and can get into the habit of doing all year round.

01. Written Sentiments
This is a classic and inexpensive way to give back. I love sending holiday cards out to friends and family, but there might also be families and individuals who don't receive any word from their loved ones. In this hyper-virtual landscape we have grown accustomed to, I feel like notes and messages have become less genuine. Taking the time to write a thoughtful and personalized note to someone is always a great way to show you care, without the commitment of having to send gifts or a festive emoji-filled text message.

02. Spreading Love to Nursing Homes
Echoing the above sentiment, many seniors will be alone at nursing homes and in long term care during the holidays. Not only that, but have been isolated for months because of the virus and haven't been able to see family. I've done this in the past and have friends that continue to decorate and create cards filled with love and care to those who might not be able to receive anything from family this year. Research your local nursing homes and get in contact with their front desk to ensure it is safe and they are willing to do so.

03. Like a Good Neighbor
While not a tangible thing to give, I think this year is when we need to be more compassionate and work as communities to take care of those that live around and next door to us. Whether that be a simple hello to those in your apartment building, plowing your neighbors drive way, or being less angry on the expressway. Think about who surrounds you, perhaps it's your doorman or even your mailman who might benefit from a little kindness and acknowledgement this month.
04. Mentors, Mentees, and More Friends Please
Since a lot of kids and young people have been socially isolated, many have been without interaction and conversation with other people their age for months. I've been a mentor through DePaul, but there are many other organizations in Chicago that are looking for volunteers to help guide and talk to kids virtually, such as the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. This group in particular provides a one-on-one mentorship program with over 2,000 kids throughout Chicago. From age 7 to high school seniors, they are always looking for volunteers who are looking for a shared opportunity of learning and growth. Plus, helping kids boost their confidence and success in school, which is always an amazing gift to give!

05. Giving Warmth
A simple and traditional way to give and donate to those in need are finding coat drives, shelters, or churches who are looking for gently used or new coat donations. We've had rough winters in Chicago, and I couldn't imagine not having a coat this time of year. So, maybe it's time to clean out a closet and donate for someone who needs it! One organization, Operation Warm, distributed more than 400,000 coats last year to over one thousand different communities. If you are still unsure where to donate coats, the Salvation Army will always accept them, and you can find your local donation center, here.

06. Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels is an organization that provides seniors and individuals with disabilities who are homebound with the proper nutritional programs and meals. Especially during a time of isolation and quarantining, having a warm meal can instantly bring joy to someone who is unable to cook for themselves. It is a socially distanced way to give back and take care of your elders this season! And if you're into cooking, why not make an extra plate for someone in need? Here is a link to Meals on Wheels in the Chicago land area for those who would like to get more involved.

07. Zoom Reunions and Reconnecting
Sometimes it goes a long way to check back in with loved ones who we don't think of very often or don't get to see. This year, I was able to create two family reunions with family who live all over the country. One of the most helpful tools I used to create the events were through Facebook. My family and I have a big Facebook group, so I was able to get people to RSVP by creating an event within the platform. There are many other ways to get people together digitally, but even a mass email to family and friends is an effort to show you care. Sometimes just being with family, even online, can be the greatest gift of all. I would also recommend playing Jack Box Games, which are really unique and fun online games you can play directly from your phone!
08. Adopt a Furry Friend
Who said animals aren't in need this holiday, too? I have a lot of friends who went out and adopted pets during lockdown, but I think more than ever there will be animals in shelters this year. Giving an animal a home not only brings your pet comfort and security, but you also get a new companion who won't judge you for how many Netflix shows you binge! Paws Chicago is currently having a Holiday Adopt-A-Thon with fees waived for adopting adult pets. They also have a great volunteer program for those looking to spend time with furry friends this season!

09. Give the Gift of Life
This time of year, more and more blood banks are in need of blood. I have yet to donate blood and realize just how important it is to spare healthy blood to those in intensive care who might depend on it. I have a close friend who does it every year and it's as simple as signing a paper and sitting in a chair with a cookie. The Red Cross always has blood drives going on throughout the year and to find one near you, click here.

10. Thank Your Mother (Earth)
Give the Earth some love this season and acquire some healthier and more sustainable consumption habits. Maybe it means being more mindful of what you recycle, buying less this season, and giving more thought to how we can take control of our wasteful habits during the holidays. Whether it be reusing gift wrap, reducing the amount of plastic you use to transport your baked goods, or opting to do the dishes instead of using plasticware for Christmas dinner. There are many ways you can waste less, and give more to the planet by being mindful of your consumption.

11. Give a Story to Tell
I've been insanely into reading this year, so much, that I think everybody should have access to the abundance of stories we find at our local libraries that might be closed right now. I know that buying books from Barnes and Noble, such as school books, can be a costly venture. What I have loved seeing throughout my neighborhood are Little Free Libraries. This organization has the largest growing book share movement that spans around the country. If you've ever seen a little cute box resting on someones doorstep with books in it, you can either take a book, leave a book, or trade a book! You can even create a Little Free Library to put in your yard pretty easily. Access to books shouldn't be limited nor should the power of storytelling.

12. Stay Positive, Test Negative
The absolute gift this year is to keep yourself and those around you safe. I will echo it until everybody continues to comply with their local restrictions and continue wearing a mask. Limit your gatherings, don't travel if it isn't necessary, wash your hands, and be smart about who you're around and where you go. We are all in this together still, so don't forget to do your part this winter. The only thing we shouldn't be giving to other people is germs. To find your local testing sites, click here.

I know this was a short list, so feel free to comment more ways of giving in the comment section below! As this year has proved to challenge us all, I challenge you to be more selfless, as I will myself. In a world filled with uncertainty, sadness, and despair, I am finding sparks of hope and light by those around me who are always going above and beyond to do something for others. It can be as simple as a smile or a thank you. I believe that we can be better. I believe in the harmony of humanity and I hope you do too this holiday season. X

My December Goals.

Happy December! The time we've all be waiting for has arrived—the holidays. Truly one of the jolliest times of the year couldn't be needed more. With uncertainty and despair lurking, this year has truly been one of the most difficult years for us all. Saying sayonara to 2020, I'm reflecting on the way this year has challenged, changed, and in some ways, reinvented my mindset.

And a happy new year...
While I want to take this year and throw it in the garbage, there were actually a few pure and joyful moments within it, despite all of the darkness. I guess that's what they say about darkness, at least. You can't have darkness without light. I can cherish in the small moments of quarantine games, laughter, snuggly movie nights, endless baking challenges, and reminisce about all of the family Zoom reunions I was able to create. It was in these dark, dark times of sadness and defeat that I found the power to connect, enlighten, and realize that what truly matters is what is here and what is now. So, as a vow for a brighter future and a happy new year, I've set aside some goals for the last month of 2020.
01. Recognize what is here and embrace it. It would be pretty ungrateful and selfish of me not to admit that I have a pretty good life. Sure, I'm not at school, in an apartment, out in the world doing what I may. But, with the circumstances and where I am in life, I couldn't be more fortunate. I say that with the utmost humility, because I'm sure someone reading this might also be taking their situation for granted. Your routine has been tampered with, what you knew is irrelevant, and the future is uncertain and as Miley Cyrus so eloquently sings can't go far but you can always dream. Times will change, but remind yourself of the greatness that already surrounds you while you still have it. Your health. Your family. Your friends. Etc.

02. Brush off what I can't control. Whether I choose to read three books in a month, bake a new recipe, finally get out my camera, or try a new hairstyle, there are things in my life right now that I can control. I can control how I start my day, react to things, make my bed or not, or watch another episode. I am the queen of dwelling and dwelling hard. Past, present, and future. I want to take in the joys of December and leave behind the shadows of months and years past and not worrying about the new year. With that, I need to acknowledge how these thoughts affect me—and my sleep patterns—but also how they affect other people. A day spent dwelling is a day wasted.

03. Feed into my creative curiosities. What I needed the most this year were modes of inspiration in days filled with staying at home and logging onto my computer. I crave creative projects—productive projects—and finally getting my camera out was one of them. Rebranding my blog was another creative project I took on during quarantine, but I always thought my blog had more potential and possibly a better reach if I tried to navigate ways to improve it. I've always written for myself, but maybe I could collab with other bloggers, take up different talking points that have to do with my environmental passions, or start a podcast. Who knows! All I know is that this month brings out the bright ideas and warm thoughts for me to reset and realign with my motivations coming into the new year.

04. Reconnect with old friends. A lot of my good friends will be coming home for winter break soon and it will be so refreshing to have people my age to hang with! It's unfortunate because many of my college and old high school friends live around the country, but my two best friends still live next door to me which has been the saving grace of living through the pandemic. Not only that, but I hope to call more distant friends I miss. There's always an undertone to one-sided relationships, but I really don't mind being the friend that calls or sends holiday cards. I get so much joy out of it knowing I can make someone's day better and that's just the reality I've accepted. We keep the friends who've been with us for the long haul and I don't think there should be reason to disconnect when life gets in the way. *Disclaimer: I am also a believer in moving on from toxic friends who don't reciprocate friendship back, but am talking more so about paused or distant friendships, and I've dealt with those too*

05. Reclaim my purpose and keep moving forward. For whoever might need to also hear this, times are going to change and life will move forward. Hopefully in an upwards direction, but you know, life isn't fair (putting that very lightly). All of this waking up and monotonous e-learning has tested my motivations, challenged what I want to do with my life after being at home for 9 months, resurged a need for independence, and an unruly reliance on my support system. I've had moments of doubt, specifically as my senior year is almost half way through, and it seems like I just got through the hard part right? Well, if there's anything I've learned from Finding Nemo, just keep swimming :)

What are you looking forward to this month?

Spreading Some Holiday Cheer from Home

I know this year has looked different for everybody and the tease of the holiday season is brightening up moods left and right. I've found this year a bit more bearable now that Christmas music is on the radio and all things merry fills Targets near and far. Holiday magic warms my soul every year, and I know how much this season means for a lot of people—but many, like my own, are not able to see their families this year. However, I won't let that stop me from having a joyful holiday season because it's what you make of it! There's still much love to go around.

This year, I wasn't going to let the worst of the pandemic ruin holiday cheer. I think we need it more than ever, so here are some easy ways you can uplift Christmas spirit—or any spirit—for that matter.

Decorating Early...

There is nothing more cheerful than putting on classic Christmas playlists, lighting some candles, and decorating for Christmas. Even if you don't celebrate, there are many ways to get festive for the holiday season and it doesn't have to be a heavy task either! Sprucing up a side table with mini Christmas trees, hanging a garland up, putting some moody fairy lights around your bed frame, or taking out the festive cushions are always simple, yet refined ways to bring in some holiday cheer to your abode! Personally, I love the homemade, DIY-ed decor like the red and gold wreath I made—there's nothing more welcoming than a festive holiday wreath. I don't know about you, but I am definitely not opposed to decorating before Thanksgiving, just make sure they're put away by Valentine's Day ;P

Checking in on Loved Ones...

This time of year acts as a reminder of those who we love and care deeply for, but might not currently be with us. If there's anything I appreciate about the holidays, it's that this time of year gives us a second chance to check in, keep in touch, and FaceTime long-distanced friends or family members we don't normally connect with. We might even feel like rekindling old relationships, friendships, or creating new ones. I know it's not the best time to be social, but there are safe ways to do so. I am currently planning a virtual family Thanksgiving event with my whole extended family and it makes my heart so full.

Sending Holiday Cards...

Something else that makes my heart so full is the season of giving. Especially sending holiday cards. As a college student, I get a lot of amazement from people who are surprised that I would even go to the extent of writing cards for people, but I believe in the sentiment—even if I don't receive one back. I get a lot of joy from writing these personalized letters to people who made my year, my day, or my life! Rather than an email or a quick text, I want people to know that I care and am grateful for all of the joy they bring me. Perhaps you could start sending out cards to people, too. Why not fill someone else's day with some kind words? You don't have to send them out to the whole town, but start with your inner circle first or those who have shown kindness to you within the last few months!

These are just a couple of bits of joy I've incorporated into my life and I hope they've inspired you to get into the spirit of the holiday season. This time of year brings a little more love and hope into the world. Wishing you all a very merry holiday and that joy and happiness surrounds you all! X

Makeup Must-Haves: Sephora Value Sets You Need this Holiday Season

I am always up for a bargain, especially when it happens when all you're looking for is a new face cleanser— et voila! More deals than you could have imagined! I'll be honest, staying home has not done anything for my online shopping habits, but I am way more inclined to purchase products that I know will be quality and also give me a bang for my buck.

Since the holiday season is coming up, you might be already gathering lists together, have decorated a tree maybe, or might be doing things a little bit differently this year. Holidays should be spent with your loved ones, so gift giving shouldn't have to break the bank either! Sephora always has some great deals going on, plus you can always find something for yourself along the way, self-care amirite? Here's a recent Sephora beauty find I scored that I think will be on everyone's wishlist this year.
I was immediately drawn to this set because I was in need of a new Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and those things are not easy to come by. I could have gone out of my way to buy a $23 eyebrow pencil OR invest a little more and get a little more with this $48 Sephora Favorites Makeup Must-Haves Value Set which comes stocked with a couple full-size classics and some travel-size samples of products I've never tried before!

I am a sucker for when there's a well-balanced set because I want cult beauty products that I know I'll love and a couple new ones to try. I was especially excited about the Nars Orgasm blush ($30) which is full-size by the way. I don't wear blush that often, but in the colder months, I like to add a bit of color and I know this is the perfect warm-y pink. I was also thrilled to try out the Huda Beauty Power Bullet Matte Lipstick ($23) in First Kiss. It's the perfect blush nude, with a bit more red toned to it. I have heard people rave about Huda Beauty, so I can't wait to wear it to the grocery store (lmao).
One product I was a little disappointed in was the Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir ($27) Mascara, which I had originally high hopes for, but when I pulled the brush out, it was covered in product and clumped together immediately on my lashes. Unless you like really dramatic lashes and not feathery ones like I normally have, this might be able to work for you, but I was just not that impressed by it. Another product that didn't do it for me was the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray ($15), only because I don't use them or think they actually work. However, I know a lot of people live for it, but maybe I'll try to give it another go! There's always one or two products in these types of sets that miss the mark, but overall, the value of this set is just too good not to pass up.

Whether you love makeup or finding good deals, I think this set isn't something to sleep on. It has a great variety of cult classic products that I think everyone could enjoy. Granted, you are getting a mix of full and travel size products. There isn't color variety either, which it would have been nice if Sephora offered value sets with different shades for different skin colors (or even eyebrow colors). You could divide this set up and gift someone one of the products or gift it to yourself. As holiday deals come out, be sure to snag this one before it sells out, you won't regret it! What will the holidays look like for you this year?

My November Goals.

Looking Ahead...
The year is soon to be coming to an end. As grateful as I am for that, there have been a lot of things I've learned, even within the last month. It's really hard to even look into December or plan anything for next year, so these next couple of winter months will be a lot of hunkering down and reflecting on a monumental year for us all. I've had my highs and lows, but mentally and emotionally, I've been challenged more than I ever have been.

I love to try and be an optimist, but in all honesty, I'm quite the cynic. This year has only confirmed it for me, but I want that to change and I don't think it's ever too late to start looking inward to admit that there are always going to be repairs to be made. It was accepting that there were things I couldn't control and other things I knew would make my life easier, brighter, and more positive because I let them go. So, looking forward to a new page on the calendar, I am setting some new realistic goals for myself.
01. Not leveling up with my inner demons. It may seem quite dark, but I think we all have those inner dark doubts or fears, negative thought clouds, or just straight up anxiety every day because the world is truly at a time when things could be okay one day and all hell breaks loose the next. This month, I will not let them control me. I will acknowledge their presence and replace them with positive affirmations. I know that these pestering thoughts do not decide who I am or what I am capable of, and I hope whoever is reading this realizes that too.

02. Cutting myself some slack. I am always one to be doing the most when I can, sending out emails and followups, getting assignments done a week early, or delegating tasks like no other. I don't give myself time to breathe or to realize that not everything is so immediate to be dealt with. If there's anything I've learned from quarantine, it's that time has slowed down. There's truth in the normalcy of it, and setting my future self up for success, but if I don't give myself breathing room and a time to digest, I'll get lost in it all.

03. Finding more creative ways to spend my time. Finding things to do during what will be a second lockdown has been difficult. When the baking, reading, writing, and movie watching is done, it can be hard to find things that are socially distanced now that temperatures are dropping. I could take up a new hobby, try out a new fitness regime, join a virtual bookclub, or start DIY dream boarding a future apartment perhaps. Besides going shopping, I need to invest my time in other engaging activities, but I think the holidays will help inspire some new ones. Who knows?
04. Thinking about post graduation. It's crazy to think that I am almost two quarters away from a degree. With the constraints of the pandemic and a hyper virtual landscape, competition for a job post grad will definitely be an unruly task. However, I am extremely thankful to have had an internship this past summer to get my foot in the door before I start sending out applications this winter and spring. It will all come down to what full-time job I can find, and I can't even think about where I'll be next year. I'm reassured that the network and community I have been able to be apart of will only cushion the job search and I would hope that employers are more open in knowing how hard this year has been.

05. Making one thing out of my day positive. We've already established that there is an abundance of negativity looming around us, so my goal for this month is to find and reflect on at least one positive thing that happened to me every day. Whether it be an old friend reaching out to me over Instagram, getting a good grade, actually running a full mile on the treadmill, or simply having a sunny day, there are many things to be thankful for—gratitude is the mood for the season of thanksgiving.

What are some things you have to be thankful for this time of year?

Mystery Solved: Being Content with the Little Things

Fall is the season of letting things go, and that mantra has echoed in my ears all month long. The future is still unknown, I'm still at home, and there's little promise of what's in store. One thing I do hold onto are the little joys I find in each and every day—at least I try to. Being content can be different for so many people who are walking different paths of life and it comes down to your own perspective of what contentment truly means.
“To be content doesn’t mean you don’t desire more, it means you’re thankful for what you have and patient for what’s to come.” -Tony Gaskins

There's always this outside pressure of knowing what you need to do, where you need to be, and making sure that everything is in place and planned. While this routine is something I know far too well, it controls us and our everyday lives. But lately, I've come to find solace in knowing that there are little positives I can be thankful for. Here are the things that make me content:

I started a new book this month, called Fable. It's an adrenaline filled adventure on the high seas. Brace yourself for pirate ships and deserted islands, as Fable, a strong and determined pirate, goes up against the forces of nature to find her lost father. It's definitely a page turner and a world worth escaping to. I look forward to it every night!

I've also been making pumpkin chai tea lattes at home, which have been quite the treat in the morning and a reward for getting through work early and powering through the day. When I'm tutoring, I'll have my iced chai and be ready to meet with new writers and students at DePaul, so it's always a great start to my day when I get to meet with people virtually face to face.

Since gyms are closed, I haven't been extremely motivated to do work outs, but I have been getting into running more on the treadmill and allot myself some time in the afternoons to running and getting my heart rate up for at least a mile a day. It's been nice not feeling the pressure of having to go to a studio and work out, but I've also felt just more refreshed and can clear my mind a bit when I'm running.

When I'm feeling like my routine is monotonous and I'm just waking up to do the same thing every day, log into Zoom, tutor, do school work, walk the dog, and so on, I try to make my day different and find the little things that bring me joy. Being content doesn't have to be a mystery, and you certainly don't have to go searching for a better path or situation at the moment. Change your perspective and outlook by accepting the fact that things might be unknown right now. Finding positive ways to cope is all we have at the moment and being patient for better things to come. How do you find ways to be more content?

My Fall Beauty Roundup

I have embraced warm tones this fall, and it's safe to say that the oranges, bronzes, browns, and reds of fall are definitely my shades. With makeup and clothes especially, I have been experimenting with some new finds. I always think back to middle school when I was watching all of these YouTubers and their extravagant Sephora hauls, but I can assure you that a couple of these products were found at TJ Maxx or were part of a sample set. I'm never really on the "hunt" for makeup products, per say but am always on the look out for some cult classics whenever I need to replenish the products I love.

Here is my fall beauty roundup...

For the face...
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation- My newest favorite foundation! I have always strayed away from foundations, but the "airbrush" quality of it has me swoon. Since I'm not going out too much, it doesn't make sense for me to put a full face of makeup on, but there are definitely those days I want to clean up a bit or experiment.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion- I am all about moisturizing as it gets colder. I hate the feeling of dry and scaly skin on a cold fall or winter morning, so to prevent that, I use this right before I go to bed. It's a lightweight moisturizer and won't clog your precious pores.

Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Good Times- Nars has to be one of my go-to brands and since I don't wear lipstick often, I find these lip pencils to be the perfect in between for getting a neutral lip tint when you wanna spice it up a bit.

Clinique Chubby Stick in Whole Lotta Honey- Along with Nars, I love the Clinique Chubby Sticks. I can throw these into my bag and also have it as a back up to chapstick if needed. They come in a ton of different shades for all different tones, but I always gear more toward the natural blush and nude tints. No lipstick marks on my coffee cup please!
For the body...

Bath and Body Works Sweater Weather Body Cream- This is my scent of the season and always will be. It is so hard to find it sometimes because it is so popular, so I make sure to stock up on hand creams, body gels, and candles in this scent for sure. It's the perfect blend of spice and woody scents.

Chloe Nomade Perfume- Along with warm and spicy scents, the Chloe Nomade perfume has been my choice of fragrance for the past couple of months. It's a warm floral with Oakmoss, Freesia, Mirabelle Liquor.

For the nails...

OPI Nail Polish in Stop It I'm Blushing- I always love a good creamy neutral or blush pink, so I happened to pick up this new shade that has a slight powder pink tint to it! You can never go wrong with OPI polishes.
For the eyes...
Glossier Lidstar in Cub- If you are someone who HATES eyeshadow creasing or having it move around on your face, Glossier Lidstars are for you! They're perfectly pigmented so you can build the color up with your finger and it lasts for so long. It also has a bit of copper shimmer, which is just divine.

Nars Due Eyeshadow in Surabaya- My newest addition and find was this little duo of two coppery brown shades from TJ Maxx. It took me so long to realize they were selling Nars products. As someone who doesn't get too playful with makeup, I love having the option to have to blending shades—as simple as can be! They're also very smooth with minimal fall out.

For the hair...
Briogeo Scalp Revival Shampoo- Okay, Ladies. Dandruff is a no-go this season. I got this Briogeo shampoo from a trial pack and have been using it sparingly to prevent the dreaded winter head itch and dry scalp. It works wonders! I've never paid much attention to the moisture of my hair, but realize it's really important this time of year.

Living Proof No Frizz Instant De-frizzer- There have been some rather humid fall days. so when I curl or just want to tame my frizzy wave, I spray a bit of this on top of my hair and kind of comb it through with my fingers. Suffice to say, it really makes a difference and my hair looks and feels shinier and more defined.
I am trying to put aside time for self-care more as the weather gets colder and the days get darker quicker. As a result, I'm getting more into experimenting with different looks. However, there are days when I just don't want to wear a single dab of makeup and that's okay! I feel like the makeup world is evolving and more people are becoming confident in their own skin, so remember to use makeup because it makes you feel good. We need a little bit more of that comfort nowadays.

Turning My Back on the Sunday Scaries

It's Sunday, I'm in bed all snuggled up, I just drank a harvest tea blend from Trader Joe's, and all is good in the world—or is it? I often look forward to cozy Sunday nights, but lately I've succumbed to the doom of Monday and my to-do list gets the best of me. What I've been referring to is this sudden sense of overwhelm, anxiety, and restlessness over what the week may bring, or the "Sunday scaries" as my family calls it. Even when I've accomplished all on my to-do list, I always find myself anxious to start a new week.

I haven't tackled this feeling or have found ways to relieve it as much, but I definitely have noticed why I might be feeling this way and things I can do to change my mindset before a new sunrise. To start, I needed to figure out what may be causing these negative thought bubbles before Monday. I think it has to do with all of the pre-existing stress I might have had that week, things I read or saw on the news, our current state of the world, or just interactions I had that day. If there's anything my conscious is telling me, it's that I need to let that sh*t go.

When I started realizing that I needed to re-evaluate my stress and negative thoughts as a passing-by, or little bumps in the road, they became things I could take control of. This season is the reason for letting things go, and as hard and intimidating as it may be to try, it's not worth dwelling over. The fear of what's to come consumes us so much that we forget what is possible during the present moment.

But enough about presence, I feel like I talk so much about it, but it's really me who needs a presence check. Sundays are usually spent out to brunch, going apple picking, going to church if that suits you, or relaxing and reading that book that's sat on your nightstand all week. There are things that don't have to be done right this instant, you are not made of iron, and you definitely need to take your foot off the gas a bit and let things be.
For those who anticipate the emails they're going to receive, dread over their full planner, or who just can't deal with getting up and starting a new work week, I feel you. It's not easy, but we have to push through day by day, as my dad always tells me. You only know what's happening now, so why dwell on tomorrow when you can make the most of every day you get? At least, I keep telling myself that.

Turn your back on the Sunday scaries and start filling your days with little joys, indulgences, and by pacing yourself because you got this—and I'm right here with you.

A Fall Reading Regimen for the Non-Reader

While I don't consider myself a Bibliophobe, or someone who hates reading, I think it is safe to say that many people have anxiety when it comes to opening the cover of a book and investing all of their time into a story they know nothing about. My averseness to reading started at a young age, filled with timed reading tests and rhetorical analyses. I dreaded it. There is a true saying that as you grow older, you grow out of bad habits and distastes. I feel like I've now come to appreciate the wonders of a new book, finding escapism through different worlds and new narratives to become immersed in.

Living with English professors and writers did me justice, but I think the noise and constant tremor of the internet has lead me to other things outside of social media rhetoric and into new worlds I discover in books. As someone who was a non-reader before, I have found a couple handy ways to reassess this distaste for reading and a motivation to find books I actually like reading, as well.
Finding a Book...

This can be probably one of the hardest steps to finding a good book and to start liking to read again. Books we read in school were forced upon us with a strict list of classics and not much room to explore multiple genres beyond Charles Dickens or F. Scott Fitzgerald. Walking into a library alone can seem intimidating and now that we can't go into libraries as we used to at our own leisure, finding books now can seem even more tedious.

For someone like me who likes mixed genres or doesn't exactly know the exact type of book they like, the stress of finding the "perfect" book to read can seem daunting. However, I confided in a book club to help me start my genre discovery. I have Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine bookclub to thank for that. I know what you're thinking, Natalie, there are SO many other great types of books out there! And I hear you, but this is what has worked for me and I've come to love the variety of authors and genres I've read so far. Reading is a unique journey for everybody, so be open to discovering book recommendations from other people who might be interested in the same topics you are.

Avoid Decision Fatigue...
Much like finding a book, choosing the book can be a much more stressful and exhausting idea. But to put it simply—it doesn't matter which book you choose as long as you read it. Don't go to Barnes and Noble, go to understocked book stores or smaller libraries so that you're not bombarded.

Making a decision on what book to read can be so draining, and I've been there. You can also subscribe to reading lists, book subscriptions, or find a Little Free Library around your neighborhood to make the choice a lot more easier.

Make Reading Time a Part of Your Time...
So many people I know say they want to start reading again, but that "there's not enough time" to dedicate to it. I think it's BS because all of that time spent on our phones—which is an average of 12 hours and 9 minutes per day—could be spared to sit down and digest a couple chapters of a book. Focus is a muscle and the desire for easy entertainment is like a craving for junk food. Rather than binge watching Netflix, it will feel a lot more gratifying to recount books you've read and actively consume something more worthwhile to your mental rigor than Tik Tok videos late at night.

I try to start reading at least an hour or so before I go to bed. That way, my eyes are not strained by blue light and reading will naturally help me fall asleep. Plus, you'll be able to remember what you read when you wake up since it will be fresh on your mind. If you can dedicate a separate time for reading, when you are most motivated and have the most focus, it's definitely a more suitable entertainment option. Plus, it drowns out the noise of social media.
It's easy to forget that reading is a privilege not an obligation. We are not forced to read anything, and school has definitely stripped away our enjoyment of reading—no 12 year old should have to read Shakespeare. We are so lucky to have access to millions of new perspectives, ideas, and stories in our history. Oscar Wilde said it best: It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.

Books can be as easily accessible as you make them to be, nothing is beyond your reach. I love that books can allow me to travel through time, learn from remarkable people, and discover complex topics that challenge me and alter my way of thinking. It will only be a matter of time when going a day without reading will be unfathomable, so why wait?

Making Your Space Feel Autumnal on a Budget

Fall is finally here and I think the majority has been waiting for this time of year since January. The leaves have finally started to show some amber and maroon shades, there's a bite to the wind, and you already know I've had a Pumpkin Spice Chai or two. What I love about this season is making my place cozy, warm, and inviting—much like I set out this blog to be! I know decorating can be a great seasonal hobby for some, but for college students on a budget (and for those who might not feel like going to TJ Maxx or Home Goods for the 20th time this week), here are some extremely budget friendly ways to get your place feeling like Gilmore Girls without breaking the bank.

Switching Out Textiles...
A simple reshuffle of pillows and throws can make all the difference on the coziness meter of your space. Whether it's changing out a pillow case or flipping over a blanket, it is so easy to make a space feel more inviting and warm with tons of textiles and fuzzy cushions. You can't go wrong with more pillows! Pulling out a fun wicker basket to store them in for friends and family is also a nice considerate touch.
At Your Local Dollar Store...
The best way to gather inspiration for fall decor on a budget is at your local Dollar Tree or Dollar General. I always find the most inexpensive decor pieces and craft items, more specifically, to create unique and intricate seasonal pieces. I was inspired to create this fall wreath by my cousins who had a wreath making night, so I decided to recruit my good friend to try and create a small one with things I could find either around the house or only from the Dollar Tree. All of the leaves, pinecones, ribbon, string, and even the foam wreath itself were found for less than $10. Instead of gluing everything, we were able to cut the pieces and stick them right into the foam. Here are 32 Easy DIY Fall Wreath ideas! A mini wreath like this will get any door or candle looking festive.
Repurposing Old Prints...
Walls can use a little spruce with updated art and prints! I think the color and patterns on the walls can really impact the warmth of a room, so why not use prints to amplify it even more? No need to go out and buy new prints when you can either draw or paint, reuse, or update old pictures on the walls.

I love to save my old Rifle Paper Co. calendars and cut them out so I have an array of prints to cycle through and ones that can be perfect for every time of the year. I've never been to Copenhagen, but this print sure makes me want to go! You could even try newspaper or magazine covers to create a collage on my bulletin board as I have with my old film photographs for a vintage and eclectic type of look.
Make Your House Smell Good...
The best way to instantly make your house feel and smell autumnal is to bake to your heart's content. I made cinnamon banana-nut bread this weekend and even made some extra loaves for later. There are many simple recipes, so here is an inspired banana walnut bread recipe that I love to refer to. I've seen people drying orange slices, roasting cinnamon almonds, and making all of the pumpkin spice flavored baked goods you could dream of. Find the ingredients laying around and you might be surprised at what you can concoct.
This time of year brings so much joy as the seasons change and it shouldn't have to cost you. There should be no pressure to "update" your fall decor because there are so many easy ways to refresh and revitalize what you already have laying around your house. I've even made a #fallfeels2020 Spotify playlist to set the mood and that's really all you need.

This time of year is meant for big changes and also letting go of things that are built up inside us. If there's one thing I know well, it's reorganizing and redecorating a space, which can always be a mood booster. Don't let the seasonal blues get you down and be inspired to create the coziest abode you desire! What are some budget friendly things you do to make your space feel more autumnal?
